Springfield/Mauser Trigger Guard Punch

L. Bengtson Arms Co.Tooling:

This tool is designed to help remove the trigger guard from the Springfield 1903 and Mauser rifles after the trigger guard has been glass bedded into the stock. It is also useful with custom stocks which have been closely inletted to the trigger guard.

USE:

With the action out of the stock, use a 6" length of hard wood dowel to gently tap loose the rear of the trigger guard. Insert the dowel through the trigger opening in the top of the stock and try to get it as far rearward as possible to avoid bending the trigger guard. Only loosen it a small amount to avoid bending the trigger guard or damaging the stock.

Then, use the Springfield/Mauser trigger guard punch to gently loosen the front of the trigger guard. Insert the pilot on the punch into the guard screw hole, ensuring that it does not hit the recoil lug area of the stock. Gently tap the top of the punch to loosen the trigger guard. It may require that the rear of the trigger guard be gently loosened a bit more, depending on how you have chosen to glass bed the magazine in place. Styles and theories have changed over the years, with some recommending a firm contact between the magazine and stock and others recommending no contact. Continue tapping gently with the punch and dowel until the entire magazine area is sufficiently out of the stock to allow the trigger guard/ magazine assembly to be removed.

NOTE:

The trigger guard punch may be used to break the rear of the trigger guard assembly loose rather than using a dowel as suggested. But, however, this may damage the punch's pilot end. It is better to use a 1/4" to 3/8" hard wood dowel to perform this action. An alternative would be to use a piece of cold rolled steel rod that has had the end coated with a layer of silver solder or brazing to prevent damage to the trigger guard.
